After I finished my half marathon, I was sitting on our sofa, looking for another half marathon to run this year, when The Boy piped up that he may want to try to run the next race with me.
At first, I was completely taken by surprise. Yes, The Boy is active, but up until the race, hadn’t shown much interest in running. After I got over the initial shock, I was excited – The Boy as a running buddy would be really fun, and he would help me push myself to become a better runner.
Between the race and now, however, The Boy had a few business trips, including another two-week trip to Japan, so it wasn’t until last night that we were able to set out for our first run together – him in his first pair of running shoes, and me in a new pair.
The Boy’s new shoes. And a toy mouse. And yes, our carpet does need vacuumed. Again. But I digress.
We set out for a simple, two-mile run. We had already taken a mile-long walk through the neighborhood, and I didn’t want to push The Boy too hard on his first run. Our run was just out and back, and I was surprised at how easily The Boy was able to maintain a ten-minute per mile pace. We alternated running with walking, and before we knew it, we were booking it down the last block to our house.
We had a blast going for a run together, and it was nice to get out and stretch my legs – it’s been several days since my last run. I can’t wait to go on more runs with The Boy, to get faster, and to go farther. He can’t wait either.
